Anime Reviews: The Cat Returns

Okay I know it's been a while since I did an anime review, but I never said they would be constant. So today we look at a Studio Ghibli movie.

What, come on be fair, everything should be up for fair criticism.
WALTER WHITE, GET US OUT OF HERE!!

LATER
Okay now we're out of there and in a secret and safe location, we can now talk about, The Cat Returns, the spin off of the movie Whisper of the Heart.
A film I have yet to see, don't expect any comments on it. The story centers around a high school girl who has a suppressed ability to speak to cats.

I'm sorry why would you suppress that ability, do you realise how much money you could make with that power, isn't that right Dedenne?
Damn straight! Anyway... One days she's saves a cat with different coloured eyes from being hit by a truck and suddenly she's being harrassed by the Kingdom of cats who want her to be marry the odd eyed cat who happened to be their prince. Seeking help Haru ends up on the doorstep of the living figurine known as the Baron.

However the cats manage to kidnap Haru and it's up to the Baron to save her as the cats take her to their kingdom as starts to turn into a cat.
Now, is the film good, well... yes it is, it's Studio Ghibli, their films are always good, well unless it's Ponyo.
Oh come and get me you bastards, PONYO SUCKS, IT'S NOTHING BUT A LITTLE MERMAID RIP OFF, SO SUCK IT!!!
Anyway the film did very well, it got 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and it has a pretty good cast, Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, Elliott Gould and wait a minute who was that who voiced the king.
My god he looks so deranged and messed up, who could possibly be the right person to voice...
Oh I should of known. If you don't know who this is, it's Tim Curry, and if you don't know who Tim Curry is, well...
Yeah and now you know. Another main character is the overweight Muta, a very large, lazy cat, who doesn't really want to go along for the ride but does care for Haru's safety. Also known by another name, but I'm not going to ruin the joke.
However the film does have it's problems, it's very short for a Ghibli movie and it feels like the characters could have been developed better. But, to be fair, it's origins do kinda explain that. You see this was originally designed for a theme park in a 20 minute short rather than the movie shown today.
Hayao Miyazaki wanted three things for the ride, The Baron, Muta and a mysterious antique shop. However the ride was cancelled and instead we got this movie and a manga called Baron: The Cat Returns.
So in other words yes, it's good, not the best Ghibli film, but it's one of my favourites. The sad thing is the reason I chose to do this... This film is kind of ignored by a lot of people, it doesn't get nowhere near as much attention as the other Ghibli films and I think that is unfair, so give it a watch if you love Ghibli or just give it a watch if not, couldn't hurt. I'm The Joel MH signing off!
