Lollipop Chainsaw

ORIGINALLY POSTED LAST HALLOWEEN ON TUMBLR
Happy Halloween ladies, gentlemen and drunken robots, today we look at a game with zombies. So is it Resident Evil, no, silent hill, no, alone in the dark, once again no, Britney’s dance beat, oh god no, that’s too scary. No we’re gonna look at a suda game and believe me, this is a good thing, presenting Lollipop Chainsaw.

Now I know what you’re gonna saw, it’s perverted and yes it’s true you get to dress her in crazy outfits a lot skimpy and there’s even an achievement for looking up her skirt and it honestly wasn’t the first one I got, honestly.
But in all honesty, depsite this, the game is pretty awesome and also insane, taking the same idea as Buffy by turning the blonde cheerleader who usually dies at the earlier part of the horror movie into the hero, but she also has a chainsaw, as well as pom pom attacks, at least they’re truly going with the cheerleader thing.  Back to the costumes, they’re buyable with platinum medals dropped by zombies which I’ll get to in a little bit, but the costumes yes, a lot are dirty, but some are from animes such ‘Is it a zombie?’ and Highschool of the dead and if you’re an anime nerd like me, it’s quite a positive thing. Now the medals, you get gold coins for killing zombies which can be used to buy stat upgrades and new combos, but the platinum are obtained by killing more than three zombies at once, known as, get this ‘Sparkle hunting’.
Now if you haven’t gotten the gist by now, whilst this game has blood guts and gore, zombies you kill tend to explode in rainbows, what, what do you expect from a game that has you collect lollipops for health. The humour of this game is brilliant, with dirty, dirty humour and an excellent voice cast with it’s two main characters voiced by Tara Strong and Michael Rosenbaum. Now if you don’t know who they are, Michael Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor in Smallville and The Flash in The Justice League animated show, while Tara Strong, has voiced characters such as Raven from Teen Titans,  Batgirl in Super Best Friends Forever and Harley Quinn from Batman Arkham games. Okay I know to many DC references, so I’ll thrown Twilight Sparkle in there, happy now. Though by the way if you want to read a zombie comic go check out Blackest Night, it’s old now but awesome, dammit off topic again, sounds familar.
The Plot of the game surrounds Juliet Starling whose birthday is ruined by the hoards of the undead risen by a tortured goth who unleashes five evil spirits to devour the school and town and only Juliet and her disembodied head boyfriend Nick can stop them, not kidding he’s just a head, after his arm is bitten she cuts his head off with a chainsaw and magical keeps it alive, why not just cut off the arm is beyond me, maybe it was too late or something. Basically these five evil spirits have something to do with music, be it a punk rock zombie whose words literally hit you or a viking metal drummer who shoots lightning.
Gameplay wise, this is a score attack game, scoring combos and kills on the attacking zombies so it’s replayability is massive for it. But the gameplay, well I did say this was a suda game and this game is what would happen if games could get A.D.D. One minute you’re slaying zombies, next you’re jumping across heads with a QTE, or playing basketball with zombie’s heads or even mowing down hundreds of zombies with a combine harvester to ‘You spin me right round, right round like a record baby’.  The game never really takes itself too seriously which is what makes it so great, including Juliet’s perverted sensei whose part in the game is far too small. Of course not all of these changes are great, one in particular is so awful it makes me want to light a dog shit bag on fire at Suda51’s doorstep, ladies and gentleman, Zombie Baseball. What the hell were they thinking, the guy you protect runs so slow and you have to protect him with the slowest rated gun I’ve ever seen while hundreds of zombies attack him, what the fuck?! Oh yes I forgot the weapons, well let’s just say your chainsaw develops through the game.

Now this game has two possible endings, and it depends on survivors, if you let any of them die bad ending, but if you save them, you get the good ending which achievement wise, well bad is worth 15 points while good is worth 100, so big difference there. So overall Lollipop Chainsaw is an awesome game, it’s not perfect, it’s humour has a couple of failings but generally brilliant, it’s only one real drawback is zombie baseball, but otherwise an excellent game. I'm TheJoelMH. Happy Halloween!
