Anime Reviews: Pokemon the First Movie

Well it's about time, I got round to this movie, the doors are locked and so are the windows, there's no escape for me, it's Pokemon the First Movie. The movie opens up with a mini movie that has no relevance to the main movie. But let's not talk about that, as I can't really fault that, I mean it's a quaint little cartoon on the side and it doesn't really have any problems caused by WB Kids. Such as...

The opening where Mewtwo was born, in the english version he is born and then slaughters his creators, while in the Japanese version you discover the lead scientist took the job to create Mewtwo so he could clone his dead daughter and he tested this with a bulbasaur, charmander and squirtle and all the clones fail including his daughter except Mewtwo and Mewtwo spoke with them all through a psychic link, they were in their own little world of happiness to be cruelly pulled away, giving Mewtwo a genuine reason for it's rage. Okay so here's a link to the full movie opening that was cut, I'll wait.
You see, and that whole bit at the end of the movie, make sense now right? And oh yeah Mew in the english version, a happy hero come to save the day and in Japan...
Yeah Mew is basically saying that because he's a clone, Mewtwo should not exist and deserves to die. Wow Mew you sound like the Catholic Church, boom, bitch slap the church. Yeah the plot is entirely different thanks to translation bullshit.
I mean the movie's ending, 'Pokemon shouldn't fight, not like this", isn't in the japanese version, the movie's whole point in the japanese is this, Mewtwo say it will you.
Words I fucking live by. But I need to address the elephant in the room.
It's in the mail, I sent it months ago, just check with your post office already. Anyway yeah, continuity errors. Here we go:
1.When Team Rocket are with the cloning machine they see a scyther and call it an Alakazam.

2. One of the trainers has a Pidgeot which he calls a Pidgeotto.

3. Back to the cloning machine, Meowth calls a Sandslash, a Sandshrew.
4. Machamp gets taken down by Bubble, okay not really a movie mistake, but I'm calling it.

5. In one scene a nidoqueen is replaced by a nidoking.
Okay so 2 out of 5 are animation mistakes which can't be blamed on the dubbers but if you're going to make a movie on a franchise, learn what you're making a movie of. I mean it's not fucking hard, have a kid with you when you make the movie. I mean it's like being being handed the Star Trek franchise to a monk who has never seen Star Trek or any tv for that matter and say to him, write our masterpiece, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, it's not gonna work out great guys.
Honestly though, the japanese version is 10 times better as it makes sense, the english version is just terrible, it has a more messed up plot than a horse after being assaulted by a rapid brony, but at least it had one good thing going for it....
FREE POKEMON CARD!
I had the Pikachu one, hold on a second, Pikachu, in the movie, check, Mewtwo of course, Dragonite with a delivery bag.
Double check, Electabuzz, um, why is there a special Electabuzz card, I'm pretty sure it wasn't in the movie. Anyway sadly I don't have that card anymore, or any of my original pokemon cards, thanks to having younger siblings who had to destroy everything I owned. Good god I remember running across a motorway to see this movie because I was late, god I don't think I even noticed the plot holes back then, good god I'm getting old. Anyway this isn't the worst Pokemon movie, Aaah aaah Pokemon 4Ever choo, though I stopped watching the movies at that point anyway and the show for that matter, anyway sidetracked again, Pokemon the First movie kinda sucks if you watch the kidsWB dub, but good in the japanese version, in other words, find the japanese version, grab some popcorn and prepare to read subtitles unless you speak japanese of course, but then I wouldn't have to say to see the movie. I'm The Joel MH signing off. Oh and one more mistake, the trainer in the opening calls Ash a talented pokemon trainer,is he fuck!

  1. Thanks for the review. Can you also tell me from where I can find good shows by Andy Yeatman online? It has been a while that I watched shows like that. His shows were available on Netflix and were very entertaining and educating. I hope to find more for my kids.
