Freedom Planet

What do you get when you take Gunstar Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog throw them into a blender and set to puree, well you get a gigantic mess, but this game I'm gonna review today is their spiritual successor and it is glorious.

Gameplay
Freedom Planet makes you play through Sonic and Gunstar styled levels where you play one of 2 characters through story mode or 3 through classic mode. The difference being adventure has cutscenes and an overall story while classic is just the levels.  The two who are playable through story mode are Sash Lilac the Dragon and Carol Tea the Wildcat.

Lilac controls like Sonic except she does a twirl jump attack which burns out some of that special meter at the top of the screen. Basically the special meter which is used by carol as well allows special attacks to be used. The spin uses a small part of the meter, but Lilac's other special move, the meteor dash makes her invincible and shoots her up like a rocket across the screen allowing short bursts of flight.

Lilac also has the largest health meter, 8 leaves. She also can do punch and kick attacks which don't drain the special meter.

Carol Tea's special meter is used purely for a barrage of kicks while all her other attacks are punches and kicks which don't drain the meter and while she can't fly like Lilac, she can wall jump, but only has up to 7 leaves.
But that's not all, if you find a gas canister, Carol can then jump onto her red motorcycle which can defy physics.
Wait a minute oh no...
The third playable character is Milla the Basset Hound and you can tell she was a kickstarter goal, hence the lack of story mode.

Milla plays differently from the other 2, while yes she can run Sonic fast like the other 2 can, but she has no special meter and only has 4 leaves, but she can use a strange magical power that allows her to create green blocks of energy to throw, a green shield which when let go shoots out a small blast and combining the two together create a large blast.
Milla can also fly short distances by flapping her ears similar to cream from Sonic and did in certain places to find 'treasures' like leaves and gems. By the gems, that meter at the top with the number counts down to zero and when it hits zero when you pick up gems you gain an extra life.
There will be future characters as well but I can't review them since they aren't available yet like Torque.
and the bosses in the game, are impressive, I mean look at this boss.
It's filling the fucking screen and by the by there is a difficulty setting available, ranging from Hard all the way down to 'casual'. But seriously the gameplay is amazing for the most part, mind you Carol off the motorcycle isn't the easiest to control, but Gameplay over all is amazing.

Replayability
This game offers 2 story modes as well as a whole bunch of levels for Milla and more characters in the future including time trials and achievements for certain actions meaning despite the game's short length, you'll be playing it for a long time.

Soundtrack
The soundtrack is exactly the sort of music you'd want to here, it screams classic 90's games like Sonic and Gunstar such as the first level's....
Even the boss music is glorious...
Overall the music never misses a beat and the vocal artists for the characters are top notch especially since the entire company of this game was built through Kickstarter. Though weirdly there is a way to trigger the bloopers in cutscenes which they animated too.

Story
And lastly the story, the story starts with the murder of a king by the evil alien Lord Brevon who brainwashes the king's son into working for him and everything kicks off when the legendary Kingdom Stone, source of all energy on the planet is stolen and the race is on to recover the stone before Brevon gets it and save the planet. As I said before the dialogue is excellent with no sign of the dreaded plot hole and it's filled with humor...

and Lord Brevon is such a good villian, it makes you hate him and makes you want to kick his ass. People have been hailing this as the true Sonic 4, and well it's certainly better than Sonic has been for years. I'm The Joel MH and BUY THIS GAME!
